Welcome to Meaning Making
Hey there and welcome to my substack. This is the first post. I’m going to be writing about a wide range of topics, mostly all concerned with meaning-making.
What do I mean by “meaning-making”? We are on a never-ending quest to create meaning in our lives. I think it’s possible to make anything meaningful - the mundane, the joyful, loneliness, mourning, walking, eating. We seek meaning in just about everything, and if we can be more intentional about this process, we can add a richness to life and work that might otherwise be unattainable.
Conceptually I will look at what meaning-making is, but I want to focus more on the things in our lives that add meaning, and what we can do to amplify those experiences, or at the very least to be intentional in the way we create them.
First up - I’ve got a series on how religions make meaning and how we might take some of those lessons and make work a little more magic.
How Religions Create Meaning
We are losing our religion and with it, we’re losing community, purpose, and the connections to each other that make life rich and meaningful.
Religion isn’t just about faith. Through religion, we mark the seasons, celebrate milestones like weddings, funerals, and births. Religions bring people together to decide what is important and what values they will live by. Religions have helped us with relationships and encouraged communities of people to be kind and forgiving to each other. They’ve built gathering places, made beautiful art and so much more.
When we put this together, we begin to see religion as so much more than the key to our redemption and salvation. Religions have helped make life meaningful, given us purpose, and provided a shared framework for living well together.
Over the next few posts, I want to break down some of the components of religion that make life meaningful, including; Purpose, Architecture, Art, Community, Rituals and more. I will look at ways we can take some of these themes and bring them back to life through work. We spend most of our lives working so why shouldn’t we try to make work more meaningful?
Sign up to make sure you get these and share this with anyone who cares about this stuff.
See you next week!
